European Islands for Sustainable Agriculture
When sustainability meets taste!
The MESA project
sustainability areas
The objective of the MESA project is to increase awareness on the sustainable agriculture and production methods of the three Mediterranean islands (Crete, Sardinia and Mallorca) and their contribution to the climate, environment and animal welfare.
MESA raises awareness of sustainable agri-food products and production methods from Greece, Sardinia and Mallorca, highlighting how responsible agricultural practices can contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental protection and animal welfare.
These themes are also reflected in the areas of action identified in Article 31(4) of Regulation (EU) 2021/2115, which addresses climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental protection and animal welfare within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy.
Prevention Activities
Prevention of soil degradation, soil restoration, improvement of soil fertility, and management of soil nutrients and living organisms.
Actions
Actions for the sustainable and reduced use of pesticides, especially those that pose a risk to human health or biodiversity.

Mediterranean Islands
The Mediterranean Islands are more than just destinations: each island tells a unique story of resilience, where communities live in harmony with the land, cultivating sustainable practices that protect their rich biodiversity.
From the scent of olive groves to the rhythm of waves gently kissing the shore, these islands offer a deep connection to nature and tradition.
Mallorca, Spain
Mallorca’s agriculture prioritizes olive oil, wine, and sustainability to protect its landscapes.
Crete, Greece
Greece’s dynamic agrifood sector produces olive oil, wine, and cheese, boosting exports sustainably.
Sardinia, Italy
Sardinia prioritizes organic cheese, wine, meat, reducing food waste, and sustainable methods.
The mesa project
Moving to a sustainable agriculture
The MESA project aims to raise awareness of sustainable agri-food products and production methods on three Mediterranean islands: Crete, Sardinia, and Mallorca.
These islands play a significant role in climate, environmental preservation, and animal welfare. The project highlights the importance of sustainable agriculture as part of the European Green Deal.
MESA, Mediterranean Islands for Sustainable Agriculture, brings the agri-food heritage of Greece, Sardinia and Mallorca closer to European audiences.
Through communication, promotional and educational activities, the project provides insights into the origin of the islands’ products and the sustainable practices behind their production.
MESA encourages dialogue among producers, buyers, distributors and consumers, helping them make more informed choices and discover the distinctive qualities of Mediterranean island agriculture.
Sustainability in Action
Mitigating climate change through sustainable agriculture
Sustainable agriculture for a changing climate
Aligned with EU strategies like the Farm to Fork initiative and the European Green Deal, MESA also boosts the competitiveness of island economies by tapping into the growing demand for sustainable agrifood products in key markets such as Germany. This integrated approach not only safeguards natural resources but also turns sustainability into a powerful driver of economic growth across the Mediterranean islands. The initiative also strengthens climate change adaptation by enhancing the resilience of food production systems and biodiversity, ensuring sustainable agriculture across Mediterranean islands. Additionally, sustainable agriculture fosters stronger rural communities, supports agrotourism, and helps preserve the cultural heritage closely tied to traditional farming practices.
Mediterranean agriculture faces challenges linked to rising temperatures, water scarcity and changing weather patterns. Sustainable farming practices can help producers adapt to these conditions while contributing to climate change mitigation.
Practices such as soil conservation, responsible water management, reduced tillage and agroforestry can support more resilient agricultural systems. Depending on local conditions and how they are implemented, some of these practices can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions or increase carbon storage in soils and vegetation.
In livestock farming, responsible management practices can contribute to animal welfare alongside environmental sustainability. MESA highlights the relevance of these approaches to the agri-food production.
Project activities
Workshops and training
This project offers workshops, training programs, and awareness campaigns designed for both producers and consumers. These initiatives aim to deepen the understanding of sustainable food production methods while promoting market growth for eco-friendly products. By educating stakeholders, the project seeks to create a more sustainable and informed food system.
