Balearic Islands:
Sustainability at the Heart of Olive Oil Production
The Balearic Islands are renowned for their premium olive oil, produced through sustainable practices that protect the environment while delivering one of the healthiest oils in the Mediterranean.
Under the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition introduced in 2019, the region has set ambitious goals for reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly farming, with a particular focus on olives, a key crop for the islands.
Nearly 70% of the Balearic olive groves are now certified organic, reflecting the growing commitment to sustainability. In 2021, the islands produced over 3,500 tons of olive oil, of which 80% was certified organic. These sustainable practices include rainwater harvesting, which helps conserve water in a region prone to drought, and crop diversification, which improves soil health and reduces the need for chemical inputs.
The Balearic Government has set a target to increase organic farming land by 50% by 2030, with special incentives for olive oil producers. This aligns with the EU’s Green Deal objectives and ensures that olive oil from the Balearics remains not only a symbol of quality but also of responsible, environmentally friendly production.
Choosing Balearic olive oil means supporting a tradition that values sustainability and health. Rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, this olive oil is as good for your body as it is for the planet.
