From Milk to Brick
The Sustainable Revolution Made in Sardinia
The Dairy Sector: wealth and Environmental Challenge
Sardinia is renowned for its dairy products. The milk processing industry is one of the most profitable in the region and represents a significant part of the island’s economy. However, it also generates a substantial amount of waste. By-products such as buttermilk, powdered curd, or whey are typically reused as organic fertilizers. But what if these by-products could be used not only in food, but in entirely new industries?
From Waste to Green Building: a New Perspective
A group of Sardinian innovators has taken on this challenge, giving dairy waste a second life in the construction sector. These by-products are now reused in the production of concrete and eco-sustainable bricks, contributing to low-impact buildings. This example of circular innovation links two pillars of Sardinia’s economy: agriculture and construction.
Circular Innovation and Territorial Impact
The process involves recovering dairy waste, extracting water to replace fresh water in concrete production. This helps protect water resources and combat drought. A key element is casein, which produces a breathable, antibacterial, and thermally insulating fiber.
The result: environmental, social, and economic value for the territory.
