Sardinia: Sustainable Legumes in the Schools’ Canteens

Sardinia promotes sustainability in legume production, enhancing their nutritional and environmental benefits while preserving soil and biodiversity.

Sardinia is increasingly embracing sustainability, particularly in the realm of legume production. The region’s commitment to eco-friendly farming practices is exemplified through the “Sanluri Collective Brand”, a project designed to enhance the local legume supply chain, starting with the excellence of its traditional legumes.

This initiative is part of the broader European “Switch” project, which supports the integration of legumes into school menus, highlighting their nutritional and environmental benefits. By promoting the use of local legumes such as chickpeas and beans, the project supports sustainable agricultural methods that help preserve the local soil and biodiversity.

The project also focuses on enhancing the economic potential of these crops by improving their traceability and linking them to high-quality, sustainable farming practices. This initiative is designed to benefit local farmers, strengthen the regional agricultural system, and reduce environmental impacts by encouraging diversified farming and crop rotation.

By bringing together farmers, institutions, and local communities, Sardinia is proving that sustainability is not just a goal but a reality, ensuring that both the environment and the local economy thrive.
