The Black Sheep of Arbus:
a symbol of the sardinian tradition and sustainability

The Black Sheep of Arbus is known for its remarkable adaptability to rugged terrain and Mediterranean scrubland.

In the heart of the Medio Campidano region, the Black Sheep of Arbus stands as a true agri-food and cultural excellence of Sardinia. This native sheep breed is known for its remarkable adaptability to rugged terrain and Mediterranean scrubland.

Pastoral tradition and local biodiversity
Raised for centuries in the areas of Arbus, Ogliastra, and some regions of the Maghreb, this breed combines hardiness with environmental value. Its farming helps preserve biodiversity and supports the continuity of traditional pastoral practices.

High-quality milk and typical products
The Black Sheep produces milk rich in fats and proteins, ideal for making high-quality cheeses and ricotta. The lactation period lasts around 250 days, and traditional low-temperature processing preserves the milk’s nutritional properties.

Promotion and local development
Recognized among the 17 native sheep breeds in Italy, the Black Sheep of Arbus is now at the heart of a revival project that combines agriculture, craftsmanship, and sustainable tourism — fostering a virtuous model of development tied to local identity.
