The quality and sustainability of Sardinian cheeses begins in the fields

Sardinia is renowned for its PDO sheep cheeses, whose quality and sustainability begin in the fields where the forage for the sheep is produced. Recently, farmers and breeders in the area have developed an innovative project in collaboration with Agris – the Sardinian regional agency for scientific research, experimentation, and technological innovation in the agricultural sector

The project proposes the cultivation of Sulla, a forage herbaceous plant that grows spontaneously in the Mediterranean basin and has remarkable nutritional properties.

This plant not only increases the profitability of farms but also ensures the sustainability of the biodiversity of the territories.

Sulla is among the most important plants for forage cultivation due to its high productivity and persistence. In some areas of the island, it grows spontaneously and represents the basis of the forage system for dairy sheep farms, which produce high-quality and quantitatively significant milk.

The project aims to create the Sulla seed supply chain for the improvement of pastures in the island’s interior areas, focusing on quality with the use of forage wrapping for optimal preservation, with species that adapt to frequent cuts and can enter the field thanks to conservation agriculture techniques.
